UK CAA eliminates volcanic ash buffer zone
The UK CAA has removed the 60 nautical mile volcanic ash "buffer zone" that was proposed by Eurocontrol and accepted by the Eurocontrol member states in the week following Iceland’s volcanic eruption, reducing the size of the No-Fly-Zone (NFZ) and allowing a greater number of airports to operate normally.
________________________________________As the UK is the first country to deviate from the dimensions for and application of the buffer zone in Europe, it will be interesting to see whether other European national aviation authorities follow its practice.
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)'s European and North Atlantic Regional office reecenty met to begin the process of amending its volcanic ash contingency plan and has said that it will hold a more comprehensive meeting in June to deliver a revised North Atlantic Volcanic Ash Contingency Plan.
